🏃♂️ Stumble Guys is the new Fall Guys
Stumble Guys is exactly what it sounds & looks like. It is copycat of Epic Games's lucrative Fall Guys title that took 2020 by storm and just recently launched on consoles free-to-play. Stumble Guys however is focusing on mobile platforms and is crushing it.
According to Appmagic data the developers are making around $400K / day from IAP (in-app purchases) and is making an average of $8M / month. Not too shabby.
What happened to Fall Guys though? How did this title take the mobile platforms market share? Remember when Fortnite got banned by Apple for trying to circumnavigate Apple's 30% IAP fee? If you don't it was pretty epic (pun intended). Epic Games even produced this awesome video making fun of Apple's original 1984 ad.
Stumble Guys just saw an opportunity and went for it. Epic Game's can't release Fall Guys on mobile so someone else was free to take those juicy IAP profits.
💰 Odyssey Interactive Scores $$$
Odyssey Interactive announced a $19M Series A to officially launch their legends based soccer title Omega Strikers in early 2023.
Their first title is a 3v3 2.5D soccer game where each player chooses a "striker" with unique abilities. This follows the same formula of VALORANT or Apex Legends where you take an existing genre and add characters with unique abilities. Fornite every player is the same abilities, Apex Legends added abilities. Counter Strike every player is the same, VALORANT added abilities.
Odyssey Interactive was founded by several ex-Rioters and they also hired Ryan Rigney as their Marketing Director which is partially responsible for the success of Apex Legends and other Riot titles earlier in his career. They've had a unique focus on high school & college competitive tournaments during their beta launch.
💰 Theory Craft Scores $$$
Theorycraft is another new independent studio founded by ex-rioters and industry veterans. They recently raised a $50M Series B round led by Makers Fund with participation from a16z.
This was announced a few weeks ago but the reason Its interesting now is some of their recent hires since the funding round was closed.
There's another independent studio called Gravity Well founded by ex-Respawn veterans (makers of Apex Legends). This studio hired a weapons designer named David Bocek back in Sept 2021 from Respawn (pouching much?). Just this past week David quietly updated his Twitter profile stating he's now working at Theorycraft (he has not updated his LinkedIn yet).
This is mildly interesting given David Bocek was the creator of the bow (among other weapons) in Apex Legends named the "Bocek".
Either Gravity Well is running into funding trouble (or internal studio drama), or Theorycraft is working on something next level to convince someone like David to jump from one (was) sexy new studio to another.
