🎧 Sony Investor Day
Sony held an investor day towards the end of May going into detail on all parts of their business. The slide deck is 189 slides long but we at Lootbox will break it down for you TL;DR style.
- PlayStation 5 is huge
- PlayStation 5 supply top priority
- Did we mention the PS5 is a big success?
- PC & Mobile will lead new growth opportunity by 2025
- PlAyStAtIoN fIvE mAkEs BaGs Of MoNeY
In all seriousness the presentation was a fascinating look into the PlayStation vertical. Sony clearly sees games as the core for all entertainment segments.
Don’t forget the above chart is in the Yen currency. This chart highlights the 2020 covid gaming pop as well as the PS5 launch, but more interesting is the PS4 sustainability.
🕺 TikTok Games
Reuters recently reported that TikTok is planning an aggressive push into the mobile gaming space via HTML5 in-app mini games. The social media giants is already running tests in Vietnam.
HTML5 in-app mini games sound familiar? SNAP introduced multiplayer in-app mini games in Snapchat back in 2019. Facebook launched instant apps back in 2016. Netflix is even pushing into the mobile gaming space. Oh and remember iMessage games?
All of these platforms are trying to translates their core UX into game ingresses. Snap is focusing on messaging to promote social effects. Netflix is leveraging their standard tile based browser interface just the same as their VOD content. TikTok, we’ll have to see if their addictive discovery feed can successfully capture user engagement.
Imagine swiping through TikTok and today’s Wordle pops up (do people still play Wordle?).
🍌 How much does a banana cost these days?
Shame on you if you didn’t get the headline reference… go think long and hard about your life choices.
The Apex Legends championship is happening in Raleigh NC July 7-10 at the PNC arena. PNC arena has a capacity of 19,772. Are there that many people that care enough about competitive Apex Legends? For sure. Are there that many people that care enough to travel to Raleigh and and spend all day in PNC arena? No clue. Are there that many people who care enough to take a chance at running into Nicewigg at the hotel bar? Probably.
How much does it cost to attend to an Esports tournament these days?
$15 for a 1 day general admission ticket.
$35 for a 4 day general admission ticket.
$50 for a 4 day PREMIUM general admission.
If they sold out the entire arena at an average of the $35 4 day GA ticket they’d net ~$700K in revenue.
The grand prize for the winning team is $500K with a total prize pool of $2M.

"I actually read it. It was entertaining and not to much hoopla (unlike those recipe mommy-blogger sites).”
