😇 Halo’s Big Rebrand

Late yesterday (Oct-6-2024) we got a surprise announcement that 343 Industries is rebranding to Halo Studios.

Here’s a quick snippet from the Studio Head at Halo Studios:

“If you really break Halo down, there have been two very distinct chapters. Chapter 1 – Bungie. Chapter 2 – 343 Industries. Now, I think we have an audience which is hungry for more. So we’re not just going to try improve the efficiency of development, but change the recipe of how we make Halo games. So, we start a new chapter today.”

Pierre Hintze, Studio Head

Along with the new studio name, they’re promising new… everything.

This includes using Unreal Engine 5 for all future projects, with multiple new games already in development.

To formally announce the changes and show some early footage of what Halo looks like in Unreal Engine, the team publish this video to YouTube: here

As a lifelong Halo fan, this is incredibly exciting.

Halo has felt like an afterthought for Microsoft for years even though it is arguably the #1 reason people (at least used to) buy Xbox over Playstation. The IP has been on side quests with their horrendous Paramount+ TV series which was just canceled after 2 seasons.

For a game who’s original title was “Halo: Combat Evolved” the franchise hasn’t really evolved. The world dominated by battle royale (PUBG, CoD Warzone, Fortnite, Apex), tactical shooters (CS, Valorant), and FPS MMORPG mechanics like Density, and the Halo franchise has been left behind.

Microsoft is truly struggling right now with a lack of Xbox exclusives and burning money with their failed GamePass strategy. They need a win and it feels like they’re going back to their core and putting their faith on the same thing that built Xbox in the first place.
