⚖ Microsoft vs FTC
Ok let’s recap just a bit.
January 18, 2022 Microsoft announced they would acquire Activision Blizzard for ~$69B. (source)
The deal came under fire from multiple regulatory agencies in the US, UK, and EU. While no one seems to care if Sony makes Destiny and all Bungie titles a PlayStation exclusive, people sure are worried about Call of Duty going Xbox/PC exclusive.
Now over 1.5 years later… Microsoft has their big day in court. This week Microsoft has been testifying against the FTC to get the deal approved.
They have until sometime in July before the deal expires and Microsoft is forced to pay a termination fee.
Honestly this whole deal chaos is getting boring and it just needs to end one way or another.
Next week expect a full summary of the court hearings.
💰 Red Rover Red Rover
Another day another video game studio funding announcement.
Red Rover has secured a funding of $5 million for a multiplayer survival game. They have offices in Norway and England and hope to shake up the survival genre with “truly captivating multiplayer experiences”.
The studio was started a year ago by game industry veterans with experience building Crysis 2, Ryse, and Ghost Recon to name a few.
Gosh don’t you just miss the old Ghost Recon days? Good times…
🚀 BattleBit Remastered
The top selling game on Steam right now (besides counter-strike) is a game called BattleBit Remastered. And it was developed by just 3 people.
Oh and it’s not free-to-play either. It costs $15 for the Early Access program.
Released on June 15, it has skyrocketed to the top charts. Rough estimates put the game mostly likely north of 500K. Which means these 3 people have pulled in over $7.5M!
So what is BattleBit Remastered?
It is a multiplayer FPS that boasts 254 player matches. That player scale is ridiculous. Apex Legends is at 60, and Warzone 2 supports 150 players.
How did a 3 person team pull this off? Low poly graphics and hard work.
The graphics look more like roblox or minecraft than anything else, but the core gameplay mechanics are spot on. Proving once again most player just want a game that works and feels good, regardless of how it looks.
